What is the PCI DSS?
The Payment Card
Industry Data Security Standard (PCI
DSS) is a set of requirements for
handling sensitive cardholder data. This
standard
was developed by the PCI Security
Standards Council, which consists of
representatives of American Express,
Discover Financial, JCB International,
MasterCard Worldwide, and Visa Inc.
International. This standard focuses on
the proactive protection of customer
account data and works to minimize data
loss and credit card theft.
Who is required to become PCI compliant?
PCI Compliance applies to any
organization that processes, transmits,
or stores credit card data. This means
regardless of your size, revenue, number
of annual transactions, or merchant
processor, you must comply with the PCI
DSS. Failure to comply with the PCI DSS
can jeopardize your ability to accept
credit cards.
What do I need to do to validate my PCI
compliance?
All merchants are required to complete a
self-assessment questionnaire (SAQ).
This SAQ addresses
your card handling practices and
procedures. Merchants that process,
transmit, or store credit card
information on a device with
Internet-connectivity may be required to
pass quarterly vulnerability scanning.
